Job Summary:

This is an entry level position offering exposure to the exciting, rapidly growing Telecom Fiber Broadband business. A significant amount of federal government money has been made available to provide Fiber Optic, Broadband Internet Service to all unserved homes in the United States. This project will take up to ten years to complete. Telecom Field Technicians report field conditions for design engineers to accurately design outside plant fiber broadband networks. Technician will be responsible for aerial and underground data collection while validating a viable, cost-effective path for fiber placement. Most of the field work is conducted outdoors along public right of way, utility easements, and private property. Job Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Gather all pertinent data required as described in the work order. 
  • At times, they may be required to interface with customers, landowners and represent UNDC and its clients in a positive and professional manner.
  • All travel costs are paid by UNDC with a focus on providing comfortable and safe accommodation. UNDC provides per diem and approved expense reimbursement. Technician must demonstrate good behavior while representing UNDC during these travel intervals.
  • During travel, daily travel to job site(s) using rented UNDC vehicle, technician will ensure that rented vehicles and UNDC tools are maintained to company safety standards.
  • Employees are required to keep good records and report expenses as required.

Training:

  • UNDC will train new Telecom Field Technicians to perform the job functions.
  • Telecom Field Technicians will learn to use GIS data gathering tools. GIS or Geographic Information System, is a digital system that captures, analyzes and displays geographically referenced information. 
  • The process is not difficult and most find it comfortable and interesting to use.
  • Basic understanding of telecommunication infrastructure and fiber optic networks will be included in the training. Technician will work with a lead technician that is skilled in the trade and will offer on the job training during the time gathering data in the field.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
General

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to accommodate travel in personal vehicle or rented vehicle provided by UNDC.
  • A satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Well organized, self-starter, with attention to detail.
  • Good verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.
  • Consistent time management with ability to prioritize work on several projects.
  • Ability to be flexible, take direction, including changes to schedule and workflow priorities.
  • Ability to follow all Field Safety standards.

Physical

  • Ability to stand, stoop, squat and bend for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to look up for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk for extended periods of time and long distances.
  • Ability to navigate through potential uneven walkways and terrain.
  • Tolerant to a wide range of elements; heat, sun, wind, rain, snow, etc.
  • Good vision and depth perception. Corrective lenses are acceptable.
  • Ability to sit and drive for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 10 – 50 lbs.

Technical

  • Proficiency with cellular communications in a business environment.
  • Ability to upload/download and edit documents in project management software.
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and specifications.

Desired Skills & Qualifications (but not required):

  • Understanding of fiber optic telecommunications design and the ability to support engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience with telecommunications engineering standards and construction techniques.
